The Professor by Charlotte Brontë

2 stars because Charlotte Brontë writes beautifully, .5 star because Hundsen is a fantastic character, and .5 star because Frances is lovely.

But the protagonist is absolutely unbearable. His Lolita-esque narration made me wonder on multiple occasions if he was supposed to be the villain. He is chauvinistic, xenophobic, and has an incredibly holier-than-thou attitude about everything. He talks shit about everyone except Frances (and still isnt even that nice to her), and makes many many weird comments about his pupils, and we just have to sit in his head and endure it. Worse, he is boring. His thoughts are not only insulting, but bland.

The story ended well, but the beginning and middle were awful just because William is the main character. Would have much preferred it from any other perspective.
