The Hidden by Melanie Golding

5.0

I have been itching for a story about selkies and was so happy to stumble on this beauty. Being a sucker for Celtic lore I snagged it as soon as I read the first few lines of the blurb.

The story switches between past and present as we follow Ruby, a loner of a woman avoiding her family and their secrets; Joanna a cop and family member of Ruby; Constance, a woman who claims to be a selkie; Leonie the daughter of Constance and Gregor...the father of Leonie and the thief who has stolen Constance's skin.

From the beginning this book held me in suspense as we moved through the timelines and tried to piece everything together. This is a true physiological thriller that will grip you by the collar and refuse to let go..even after it's finished. I found every character to be intriguing in their own way, even the mysterious and dark Gregor who from the beginning....something felt off about. This story dives into the relationship of mother and daughter, giving us multiple prospectives on what at times can be a complicated entanglement.

The folklore was beautifully captured and woven into this dark story. It was so much more than what I could have hoped for. Each chapter begins with quotes that pertain to the Scottish/Celtic lore and the songs mentioned were true to its roots. I wish more people were talking about this book because it deserves all the attention.

I see a reread in the near future!
