The Shadow Man by Helen Sarah Fields

challenging dark emotional informative mysterious sad tense fast-paced

5.0

This was amazing!! It's easily one of the best thrillers I have ever read! It's definitely my favourite thriller of this year so far, and it's going to be a near impossible feat to top this one!

The Shadow Man began with an instant shot of adrenaline and didn't let up until the very end. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire time I was reading this book. It was fast-paced, beyond tense, and rather stressful. I could never predict what would happen next and felt like I couldn't settle once. All of this makes for the PERFECT thriller, in my opinion.

The characters were amazingly complex. My favourites were Connie, Meggy, and Baard. I absolutely loved reading about the investigation - the observations from the people working on the case, the process from one step of the investigation to the next. All of it was truly gripping and full of interesting information.

The story itself was unique. It was constantly in motion, never stale, and frequently gruesome and disturbing.

I loved everything about this book, but my favourite thing of all was that I got to experience the story from all angles. Every important perspective was provided, which made the story even more chilling! There are so many thrillers where important details are left a mystery until the people on the case discover the answers themselves, but this one allowed me to see everything develop as it happened. I loved that about it!!

This was my first Helen Fields novel, and I am definitely interested in reading other books by her in the future.
