A young Japanese girl, Naoko and American sailor, Hajime fall in love and want to marry. Her family will not accept him as it will bring shame on the family. Naoko runs away and they marry. Hajime has to go back to sea and Naoko is left alone and pregnant with some very difficult times ahead of her. The story is told from 2 different time lines - 1957 when they met and the present time.
I really liked this story, finding it so interesting and heartbreaking at times.
