I thought this was non fiction until almost halfway through (so also thought the narrator was female), so I felt a bit misled when I found out it was fiction!
It's a reflection on growing up as a Dutch kid in Indonesia, and the way the narrator's life takes a different path from his Indonesian best friend. An interesting story, with important themes, although I didn't like the fake autobiographical style.
The writing does powerfully evoke the landscapes, but I had to look up a lot of words, and many of them were not even in the dictionary ðŸ«
