“It was from that moment I began to hate them, and my hate is still the only link between us today. They were our first oppressors. They were the first of the faces of hell and death.” I first read this book in high school and this stuck with me. It doesn't try to make sense of the Holocaust or excuse the behavior of these men. It shows that the pain and suffering they caused is irreversible and still haunts people and our society. It is raw and gut wrenching and incredibly written. I recommend this book for teaching the Holocaust or learning for yourself.
