Loved reading this after I’d already read Curious Tides. It’s told from Romie’s perspective and offers us a glimpse of the day before she ventured into Dovermere Caves. While I did not find much to love in Romie herself, making me wonder about Emory’s strong attachment, her affection and concern for her car Dusk if she failed to return was incredibly humanizing. I also appreciated the practical look at the process of bloodletting, explaining ideas within Curious Tifes more fully. I’m not sure I’d ever call Romie lovable, but I loved stepping into her perspective to understand what drew her to participate in the ritual that night.

I’d read this after reading book one, and not before, if I got to tell a friend which order to read these in. I’m very much looking forward to continuing to explore this world in book 2.
