Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis

3.0

To me, this is the story of a man rebelling against the arrogance of elitist attitudes in academia. It's also the story of a man choosing between a woman he deems unattractive but feels bound to, and a woman he finds very attractive but is currently unavailable. Somehow these narratives work well together, and this is mostly down to Amis' writing style. The book is filled with charm, and humour, mixed in with moments of seriousness and reflection. Jim Dixon comes across as a very real character. He's someone that's winging it through life, likes to make lots of silly faces and has somewhat violent but funny fantasies about people that annoy him. Sadly I think some of the other characters aren't given the same time to shine. There's a large supporting cast, and some of them feel like what they are; side characters with no lives outside of being there to be the punchline to a joke or to move the plot along.
