Drive by James Sallis

3.0

A fast paced and violent ride.

I enjoyed Drive despite its difference to my usual reads. Every page had me wanting to the read the next. Everything about it was fast - the dialogue, the action, even the writing itself. It felt very in the moment, and that paired with the non-chronological storytelling made for an interesting read. Though to some, this may be disorientating and confusing.

It's a violent book thanks to its main character, Driver, and his dangerous lifestyle, however the depictions weren't gratituitous. Just enough to let you imagine the gore yourself.

If you've watched the Drive (2011) film, like I had, you'll find it deviates sometimes from the book. Same characters for the most parts, but sometimes different fates. Still, I liked both in their own rights.

The book had some nice quotes, whether that was just snappy dialogue or nice lines like this -
This is what people are talking about when they use words like grace.

Not being an American, I think some references in there may have went over my head, but not enough to throw me off completely.

Drive is certainly a joy-ride of a book.
