The Parisian by Isabella Hammad

Phew finished it! This is a long, demanding read, Midhat's story woven through an intensely complex period of social manipulation and geopolitics. I sort of wish I had read the history at the end of the book before reading the book because I was not aware of this important history, so I finish the book very much better informed. I did find myself getting lost when the book took a twist and I could not see where it was going. It is was not till right at the end of the book that I found the threads weaving together and I could make sense of it. It almost needs reading again. Undoubtedly it is a beautifully crafted and important historical novel and I am pleased I persisted.
