The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman
5.0
I apparently missed the boat on even knowing what Practical Magic was growing up so I'm officially here now to catch up!
A quick scroll through my read books should make it clear that I don't tend to pick up fantasy. There isn't a specific reason for it, it's just not a genre I usually find myself gravitating for when I'm in the mood to read. But this instance is one of those happenings where I am kicking myself for not reading more fantasy books because I absolutely LOVED IT.
The Rules of Magic was whimsical, emotional, a little chaotic (in a good way), and full of just all around good life advice. I loved following along with the kids throughout their entire life and grew connected to each of the characters and their lives. The forever twisty and adventurous plot kept me wanting to read while the author's writing style made me feel like I was right there with the characters. I didn't know I was going to feel so connected to the overall touching storyline and that surprised me in a good way. This one was just a good old read. It easily held my attention as I savored a story built around equal parts mystery/witchy-ness and heartbreak/drama/love/lessons/everything.
