In the Shadow of Spindrift House by Mira Grant
5.0
on a Mira Grant scale this is a 4.5 for me, but that’s still a five compared to everything else. The blurb printed on the back of this bugs me because aside from dating it with the Stranger Things comparison, the amazing premise is ignored. This is “what if the Scooby Gang existed in a contemporary Lovecraftian world?” The characters are recognizable counterparts!
Aside from that, I’m not a huge fan of tentacled horror but the character-relationships were so well done—and provide a counterpoint for Shaun and Georgia that gives her audience a fuller spectrum of foster/adopted sibling relationships—and the setting is perfect. Not my favorite Grant novella, but Grant novellas are my favorite.
