While the plot was intriguing and kept me engaged, I found the author's reliance on the 'gay villain' trope to be exausting. The portrayal of the gay characters was particularly troubling: one depicted as a heroin addict meeting a tragic end in his mid-20s, and the other committing suicide after assaulting a child. I felt as though the author had a very narrow and negative view of LGBTQ+ people, which has left me uninterested in exploring more of her work.
