Impact by Douglas Preston

5.0

Sci-fi meets thriller. Once again, I feel that Wyman Ford is superfluous. He is only part of the story and the character he portrays could have been anyone else. And once again, there are parallel stories here that merge in the end. I'm not a big fan of parallel stories since I have to refocus every time the story line changes.

Spoilers:
Summary: Meteorite impacts Earth. They discover that the meteorite is much more dangerous than at first assumed and could spell the end of Earth!

Here are the different storylines:
Story line 1: Young co-ed student in New England lobstertown sees impact and finds location. She is roped into being Ford's assistant and later provides the solution.

Story line 2: Researcher at Mars Space Lab discovers gamma rays from Mars from stolen hard disc drive and figures out where rays come from.

Story line 3: Assassin tries to recover stolen hard drive at all costs.

Story line 4: Ford is sent to spy on illegal mine in Cambodia. Comes back to US, finds connection to researcher, finds connection to co-ed and thus ties all storylines together.

Overall I enjoyed it because the writing was easy to read and follow and I didn't really expect the ending. A lot of things are forced but it's ok if you don't think about it too much.
