Fatal Justice by Sally Rigby

I hated the first installment in this series and wouldn’t have read this next one if I hadn’t bought a 3-pack of Cavendish & Walker audiobooks and also run out of audible credits.

But I was pleasantly surprised by how much better this second installment was. Specifically the police procedural elements were vastly upgraded from “insultingly bad” to merely “mediocre.” The style is a bit hand-holdy and there aren’t many twists, but it was actively bad like the first one. That let the better parts of the book, especially the relationship between the two main characters, take center stage.

I wouldn’t call this a cozy—it’s too gruesome for that—but that central relationship did feel pretty cozy and I can see now why people like this series. I’m going to finish the 3-pack and never read them again, but I didn’t hate this one
