My Friends: A Novel by Hisham Matar

5.0

My ability to review this book adequately would fall miserably short. In short, this is a masterpiece. It is brilliant from the first page - the writing, the characters, the story, the execution. I was caught up in, not only the story of Khaled, Mufasta, and Hosam, but also the historical context of the Libyan Revolution under the Qaddafi regime. This is also a story about exile, strong male friendships, and longing to find one's home. It's equal parts haunting and beautiful as Matar explores the complexities and upheavals of war. As soon as I finished reading, I flipped back to the beginning and read the first 20ish pages again...and that's when the true brilliance of this entire book really shone!

I was so moved by this entrire reading experience that I went into a deep dive in my podcast apps, curious to hear some author interviews. After listening to a lot of them, I truly wonder if a lot of this book isn't somewhat autobiographical. The interviews with Matar moved me as much as his book did - he is a remarkable man, and I've added his backlist to my TBR.

Trust me when I tell you to prioritize this one! It's so relevant to our current events, but even beyond that, it's a beautiful story that will hook you from the start.
