Logan Likes Mary Anne! by Ann M. Martin

4.0

This one was really cute. I love Logan and Mary Ann, and the ways that the BSC supports Mary Ann as their friend. I read this one because I love this series, but I also wanted to see if I thought the 3rd grader that I work with would like it. This one, along with Boy-Crazy Stacey, focuses on romantic relationships with boys and the way that the girls' feelings toward the opposite sex are changing. As a 3rd grader, I'm sure I would have loved this because even at that age, I was interested in romance. But, for the 3rd grader I work with, these are not the right fit. These books are targeted at Middle Grades, even though the characters are older. I think romance can be a small part of middle grade books because I think at that age some kids are in the early stages of feeling some of those things. I don't think it should be the center though... and while I think these graphic novels are about more than boys (they are about teenage girls and their friendships and family relationships, and the struggles they face), I think they are starting to become more appropriate for jr/sr high ages.
