This is a pretty sexy short from one of my current favourite authors. I would describe it as a sort of sexy taster of a New Years’-themed romance featuring Giselle and Roman, rather than a complete story with a full resolution. And the author does warn us about this in a preface at the start, so definitely take her at her word and know going in that it is just a festive slice of Giselle and Roman’s story rather than a whole cake. There is lots of room for this story to evolve and grow into a complete full length deal for the couple down the line.
I think if you take this in the spirit in which it is written, as a New Year’s gift from the author, this is fabulous. In this very short novelette, the author manages to in a short time, create characters and conflicts that you actually care about and are emotionally invested in- Giselle as someone who has sworn off love and romance for years is compelling in her unignorable crush on Roman; Roman not wanting to make things weird with his best friend’s fiancée’s BFF is cautious and considerate in his own flagrant attraction to Giselle. And yet, when they decide to get over themselves, the chemistry IS explosive and more-ish. This iteration of the story is one-night stand focused but an inner Oliver Twisty part of me always wants more- more story, more resolution, more drawn out emotions and of course more HEAing, all the things this author excels at. But of course, this is not that book and in my opinion, that is probably not the intention of this novelette. This is “something light,” a good bite size taster of a story with a sort of HFN that makes you sort of excited for whatever the author is putting out next year, whether it’s more from Giselle and Roman, or something else.
I got gifted an advanced copy of this book by the author with no obligation to review.
