The Handmaid's Tale (Graphic Novel) by Margaret Atwood

4.25

There's so much to unpack and digest.

I read this after the Penelopiad and see parallels between the hanged maids in the house of Odysseus and the handmaidens, a reminder that oppressive forces like this have existed in the past. Also seeing parallels with the world today, in a time when JD Vance is a VP running mate of the United States, his extremism parading as if it was normal and mainstream. The real horror isn't the actual world of the book--which is genuinely awful--but the way it's too similar to the thought processes of some messed up people in power in the past and today. Horrifying. Well done.
