1Q84: Books 1 and 2 by Haruki Murakami

4.0

I'm not usually the sort to buy a whole series in one go- I usually buy Book 1 and then take the plunge once I know I enjoy the series. However, after reading 1984 (even before it was compulsory reading for my Bachelor's) and seeing the comparison in the blurb, I took a leap of faith.
There were points where this book bored me. The pacing of this book is quite slow with a strong internal monologue in parts but sometimes I found it too slow. His extensive descriptions of what some would describe as mundane sometimes went on too long for my liking.
But I enjoyed the plot. This was especially so for Book 2, which I finished in a week compared to a couple of months for Book 1. I had a lot of questions which were not answered which kept me intently reading to try and discover the mysteries this book creates. There were no characters I was an extremely huge fan of, but then again, there were no characters that bored me excessively.
All in all, a book that could be shorter than it is but an interesting read nonetheless.
