A solid, old-school fantasy novel that stands on its own without feeling too simplistic or cliché. It's a story written for a young audience, but I believe it can be enjoyed just as well by adult readers.
While adventure is the basis of the book and there aren't a ton of introspective moments, the author doesn't shy away from including scary or melancholic scenes that make the story more complex and relatable.
I liked Sabriel and I wish we'd got to know more about Mogget! The chapter where we get a glimpse of his true nature was chilling.
The one thing I wasn't keen on was the romance subplot -- I thought it was way too rushed and generic. In the words of the wise Avril Lavigne, it felt very much like: " He was a boy / She was a girl / Can I make it any more obvious?"
