The Pisces by Melissa Broder

I don't know how to feel about this one! It was not always an enjoyable read, but it was impeccably crafted. This is one of those books where you can see the disaster coming from a mile away, and watching the protagonist dance towards it, oblivious to the damage her own selfishness is about to cause, is downright maddening. It was a good book, but I honestly don't know if I'd recommend it to just anyone! (See content warnings if you are unsure.) It is an interesting reflection on love, and the various forms it can take and purposes it can serve. I'm glad I read it.

One quibble that I cannot forgive: A scholar of Homeric and Sapphic poetry should know that the sirens were NOT mermaids. They were bird-women who perched on the cliffs and sang to lure sailors to their deaths. Apart from that one discordant note, the rest of the ideas were woven together quite well.
