Flight SQA016 by Amanda Radley

5.0

I don't think there are enough words to describe my love for this story. Originally written as a swan queen (Regina Mills and Emma Swan from Once Upon A Time) fanfiction, the story centers around Emily White and Olivia Lewis. Emily is a flight attendent riddled in debt due to the medical expenses of her sick five year old son. To earn extra money, she takes a job as a first class attendant on a New York to London transatlantic route. There she meets Olivia, who takes the flight twice a week to work. She's highly successful, but has extreme difficulty in social situations. Emily's son Henry is flown to London to receive a necessary heart surgery, which set a series of events in motion, bringing the two women together.

The best part of this story for me is how much I related to Olivia's character, being a socially awkward lesbian. There were so many moments in this story where I was seeing myself in Olivia, seeing myself react in similar fashions in social situations. My social issues are more anxiety related, but a lot of times, I can feel alone in my thoughts. It always seems like everyone else is totally comfortable and knowing in social situations, and then there's me. Reading about Olivia made me feel less alone, like there are other people like me out there. Also seeing how successful she is, it gave me some hope as well. Sometimes, I feel like my social issues hold me back from a lot of things, but maybe they don't always have to.

This was one of my favorite fanfics I've read, and I loved it even more as a novel. I loved the development between Emily and Olivia, and the relationship between Henry and Olivia. I loved Simon, and his understanding of Olivia. I didn't like Emily's drastic change in the end, but I'm sure things will get better in the sequel. This story struck a chord with me as Emma Swan and Regina Mills' and even more so as Emily White and Olivia Lewis'. I'm impatiently awaiting the sequel.
