The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope by William Kamkwamba

4.0

Wicked smart kid in rural Malawi helps his community through his genius. What’s not to love?

Favorite book of this month so far.

PT: mechanics, RATW- Malawi, enthusiasm in science, smart-kid-is-doubted-then-feared trope

1) Mechanics. I. Love. Mechanical stuff. I love it. I love the notion of working to build something from nothing and of being scrappy and resourceful enough to know that you CAN produce creatively efficient material from very little. William DOES that. And he explains his thought process the entire way. GOD that’s incredible. Excuse me while I recommend this to everyone.

2) clarity of speech + humble narrator.

3) a genuine day in the life. THIS is the goal of the reading around the world challenge. I’m looking forward material that explains what life is really like in X region/country, what hardships the populations have recently faced, what joys they find in daily life, what central challenges continue to arise despite their best efforts. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR.

4) Environmental breakdown. This kid really considers the problem from MULTIPLE angles and presents it in a rEADABLE way holy SMOKES. That bit about the deforestation especially akchwihdjwhd

WIDL
1) it was good but not one of the books that really Moved My Soul. It was missing that je ne sais quoi factor.

NEUTRAL GROUND
1) this book was intended for a younger audience, but really it’s enjoyable for all ages. The messages are timeless and the narrator’s enthusiasm is blessedly contagious.

2) Varian from Tangled the Series + Phineas and Ferb vibes. (Pre-antagonist)
