Drive by James Sallis

"Much later, as he sat with his back against an inside wall of a Motel 6 just north of Phoenix, watching the pool of blood lap toward him, Driver would wonder whether he had made a terrible mistake."

As first lines go, it doesn’t get much better than that. This book grabs you with that first line and then hangs onto you with another hundred just as intriguing and well written. It's probably a classic, or at the very least deserves to be a classic. A tight, stylish noir thriller.
