An Offer From a Gentleman by Julia Quinn

3.0

3,5*
Sophie Becket is an Earl's illegitimate daughter. And in a cinderella-like story, she lives a life of servitude to her step mother and step sisters. But for one night she dresses like a lady and she walks in the Bridgerton house as a guest at Lady Bridgerton's masked ball.

Benedict Bridgerton attends his mother's ball with little enthusiasm but when meets a mysterious masked woman he is intrigued. They spent some time together and while she tells him nothing personal about her, she captivates his every thought. But she disappeares abruptly and he cannot locate her ever since.

A few years later at another, completely different party, which he enjoys very little Benedict rescues young maid from the dishonourable intentions of her master. But soon he realises that he doesn't feel mere sympathy for her but something so much more primal and impactful.

So Benedict is torn between his attraction to this irresistible but unsuitable woman and the mysterious lady that now lives only in his dreams. Nice, eh?

If only.

Well we could have gotten to the sweet and lovely ending without that nasty business in between.
