This book is literary fiction + scifi (dystopia) + psychological suspense. If you like reading about flawed, messy, morally grey characters making hard choices and experiencing dream-like oddities, this is a book for you! The writing is lush and complex, and the food descriptions are mouth-watering. The protagonist is bisexual (doesn't use that, or any, self-identifying term, but they describe being with partners of various genders). It ends on a hopeful note that I wasn't expecting .
I read this to kick off my year of catching up on great 2023 scifi releases, as well as for Torches & Pitchforks (theme: red flag relationships).
