I want to be able to sit here and just wax bloody poetic about how much I freaking loved this, but I genuinely don't think the words exist, or rather, I am not eloquent enough to find the words to do it justice.
So just know, Esek is one of my favourite characters ever. She is diabolical, maniacal and so unashamedly selfish that I cannot look away from the chaos that she exudes. Six and Chono and Jun and Liis and Makar were also stellar, but Esek holds a special place in my book-laden heart.
The world-building is aces - from the politicks to the machinations to the intrigue to simply how it complements the plot so well and provides the basis for everything to occur so effortlessly.
And the plot? I have not been so engaged in a plot since February? when I read my last 5-star read and I'm feeling a bit bereft now that I have to wait for the sequel. It's enthralling, feels so rooted in the world it plays in, and excels at maintaining high stakes without disclaiming exactly what the stakes are.
Genuinely one of my favourite sci-fi reads ever, could be in contention for all-time favourite, and I have already pre-ordered the sequel because Bethany Jacobs is my new auto-buy author.
