The Iron King by Julie Kagawa

3.0

This is the perfect book for those who are just stepping into the world of the Fey. It's not too overwhelming, not too much detail and the characters are quite understandable from the get go. It has it's twists and turns, plot surprises and moral conflicts, but not so much that you need to stop reading to get yourself together again haha...

Ok so it does focus more on the gloomy part of the fey, which is understandable. Without giving any spoilers, I just did find that the book was limited in terms of content. Maybe it's just me, but I do find that the book stuck to one path, and did not elaborate on any details, or growing the world where the character found herself in. I mean, it's a magical realm! You can go crazy with explaining everything (but not too much, mind you...), but Kagawa just focused on the immediate surroundings, which i found a little bit simplistic.

Due to the simplicity of the novel I did find that the characters were one dimensional. Ash was quite predictable in terms of the broody, grumpy, quiet, mysterious guy who instantly turns our protagonists insides to butterflies.

Meagan (can't remember her spelling for the life of me) I liked, sort of. Ok, so she has a sense of humor. She adds a modern perspective on the old ways of the fey which I liked. The fact that she was somewhat useless and just a bystander in fights was a little annoying.

Like I said, this book is perfect for the beginners or those new to they fey. From the perspective of someone who read a few other novels in this area, I did expect a little more. Due to the simplistic descriptions, it felt like the events happened quite fast. Even though it did not actually happen at a rapid pace, I wish we had some more depth and insight in our protagonists thoughts. So even though the author tried to show conflict and character development, I think it would have been more successful if she elaborated on things a little more. This would have helped us create a more intricate image of characters, instead of viewing them somewhat superficial.

But putting all that aside, I love the storyline, it's something different, new and a comfy read. I give it 4 stars because I think someone who would like a 'light' read will definitely appreciate this book and enjoy it.
