Kindred by Kirli Saunders

emotional inspiring

5.0

This collection has been on my shelf for a few months. Everytime I pick it up, I read the first poem titled, “Matriarchs” and leave it there. That poem is enough to make me feel emotional, nourished, and settled.

Yesterday, I decided to read the next poem, and the next, & the next - let’s just say my intuition was guiding me, and I learned not to question it.

Kindred is an incredible collection and a favourite. It’s emotional, melodic, plays with form and movement. But most importantly, it’s accessible. I believe there’s a poem in here for everyone to feel connected to and reread numerous times without having to go any further.

Her poetry has such a memorable rhythm to it. So many lines start with verbs, so much of the imagery evokes each and every one of your senses. Her connection to Country, family, friends and the self is illuminating and nourishing.

Like with all poetry, read this collection out loud. You won’t realise which passages will make your voice tremble slightly or make you smile.
