Bring Me Your Midnight by Rachel Griffin
3.0
I felt that Mortana’s character was inconsistent (she starts out shallow & rude and then becomes an expert on interpreting the moods of those around her from out of nowhere) & I wanted a bigger resolution for the New Coven. A lot of people are still being lied to here, idk & I’m glad Ivy finally got it together, her family being upset made no sense to me… because it’s “dark magic” but your child was dying an untimely death… hello? I thought Wolfe helping Landon was going to bridge the gap with the Mainlanders but then they gave them the mind eraser, like, stop doing that. How is THAT not the “dark magic”
The Scarpetta Factor by Patricia Cornwell
4.0
I like that the series is back to using the crime investigation as a focus. Ending seemed rushed though.
The Wolf King by Lauren Palphreyman
4.0
I was hate-reading through the 1st half of the book -cliche plot devices & tropes, it’s ACOTAR w/werewolves (I hate when people compare everything to SJM, I know she did not invent all things -but Blake is so Rhysand coded, Full Moon Ritual/Calanmai, fairywine/whisky- provoking a big oaf who should be all powerful but sucks at politics) sufficed to say I was not shocked at the outcome but I ended up liking it, it got to a savvy & diabolical reveal
Home Is Where the Bodies Are by Jeneva Rose
3.75
I liked this, I made myself slow down while reading it to really contemplate the possibilities in the mystery. Ultimately, I was not shocked by the outcome & the focus was more on the drama than the mystery. Good but not great.
The House on the Water by Margot Hunt
3.25
I was seeking out more Margot Hunt after reading the Guests & found this free on audible. It was fine, not my favorite. It was pretty short so there wasn’t a lot of time to be too twisty or juicy, but no major complaints
Sleepy Willow's Heartless Soul by Dicey Grenor, Dicey Grenor
4.0
Even more action than the first one, & bonds deepen between the characters as Willow learns more about her destiny & starts her journey to be her own maistre. Weirdly heteronormative vampire rules for no reason? Which is very strange when it’s sex work positive, racially diverse, with mental health & chronic illness rep. But can’t win ‘em all.
The Missing Years by Lexie Elliott
2.75
Ultimately I liked the way the mystery came together (such as it did) but some parts were such a drag. Many things don’t quite add up. Ailsa & Carrie could have run for the hills at any point so even within the broader gothic horror parameters of “things don’t always add up” …just get out of there
My Dearest Darkest by Kayla Cottingham
3.75
Weird, YA eldritch horror. Finch’s cluelessness was a bit grating at times, but she navigates her way through her relationships & friendships at a prestigious performing arts school with a hidden horror.
Someone We Know by Shari Lapena
3.75
Good but not great, not as twisty as I expect from her & lots of time spent not on the main mystery.
Monster, She Wrote: The Women Who Pioneered Horror and Speculative Fiction by Lisa Kröger, Melanie R. Anderson
4.0
A good retrospective of women throughout the ages who pioneered & innovated the horror and speculative fiction genre. A little light on analysis but I enjoyed the way it was broken down by trends. Audio was not the best format for this just because I had to keep stopping to google someone or add books to my wishlist & I would rathe have had a hard copy to refer back to
