no oh this was not it.

maybe cuz i didnt like how lowkey toxic the whole thing was and how they disregarded other things for their feelings but yk it was not enjoyable.

i finished the whole thing in 2/3 days but i was chugging thru it like a bowl of soggy cheerios and i didnt feel the "love" that was supposed to be there. it felt like unnecessary pining like a 3 yr old wanting pokemon cards for his bday.

tbh it was well written in some aspects and i think thats why i finished the book but the plot itself and the characters were just uhm... no.

it was funny and a light read but idk
since shakespeare write *plays* his work is meant to be watched not read and i felt like reading this removed much of the enjoyment i could’ve felt if i watched a version of it
there were times where i got bored and it took me FOREVER to finish this but i think its mainly cuz of the time it takes to process shakespearean context references and language

OK HELP WHAT

in my eyes, this book doesn’t show romance… it shows recklessness and the reason why ppl think teens are immature.

here me out
they saw each other and kissed once and they decided to get married. i dont care what time period this is in or what age you are. you don’t make rash decisions like that. what were they expecting??? it was more of sexual attraction than a romantic one since they never got to know each other. and the night before romeo left they sat about love talking instead of figuring out a plan to meet up again??? cmon babes

their families bugged the living daylights outta me. they feud so much with multiple deaths on both sides and FOR WHAT????? its been going on so long they dont remember why they are feuding. HELLO IF U R BOTH THE RICHEST SHOW IT BY CLASSINESS NOT VIOLENCE. even with multiple deaths not one sensible person says it’s wrong and the only person who was lowkey calm- romeo- ENDS UP KILLING SOMEONE TOO

and oh dont get me started on friar lawrence
oh lord save me
he is meant to be experience and mature and he deadass comes up with a stupid plan for juliet to play dead. when romeo is exiled and DOES THE FRIAR NOT KNOW HOW STUPID AND IN LOVE ROMEO IS AHHHH
he leaves juliet stranded when people die and its like who r u????

paris also just didnt take a hint and he BARELY knew juliet and unlike romeo, juliet didnt even love him back and HE ALSO…. UGHHHH

lemme just say that mercution provided depth and comic relief we all needed and what did shakespeare do to him smh

and the fact that juliet sorta breaks society’s standards and doesnt listen to her father’s ridiculous ideas at times, is quite a breakthrough considering how old this is but she LITERALLY GETS PUNISHED FOR IT BY DYING. it bugged me in the wrong way like if you choose who you wanna love and marry and disregard your father… u will be punished••••
idk just my opinion

i think people love this because “lovers die for each other” or “leonardo dicaprio” or “mmm true love” but i say if this is ur idea of true love—— pls talk to someone

ok i have read a lot of spoilers online whilst reading this so that does influence my opinion here n there but....

celaena celaena celaena... typical badass ya fantasy protagonist and yeah that typicality usually doesn't fail. she was interesting with her humour at times but overall she felt bland and not different to other characters i've read about. her whole thingy with dorian and chaol and her being indecisive felt a bit childish to me but i dunno i didnt like her vibe ig???? like she didnt sit right with me but i didnt mind too much but i did end up finishing this book. AND TO MENTION SHES AN ASSASSIN. HOW??????? she sometimes seems so ignorant of things and her surroundings it's hard to believe shes a criminal. i feel smarter than her and i know what might happen and as a top-class assassin U SHOULDNT BE OUTSMARTED BY ME!! i wanna be kept on my toes and shocked by her actions and she should be able to camouflage anywhere and i didnt really see any of her tough side nor her personal side (well properly anyway)

chaol and dorian also feel very typical and yeah they were meh ig but i didnt feel any chemistry with celaena for either of them personally. i just feel like everyone is very young and inexperienced.

the plot is actually kinda interesting and the idea of the competition seemed kinda cool. i did get bored at times which meant i would binge sections of these at a time and then not read it for a while cuz i found it plain.

the ending was kinda a blur to me and felt rushed but that did add to the excitement but it meant it kinda just happened and i had to swallow it.

IT JUST SEEMED SO GOOD AND JUST KINDA FLOPPED SOMEWHERE FOR ME.

the story just felt like it ended up to serve celeana's ....idk self??? like it was made to show her as beautiful, talented, wanted, different and it kinda bugged me. we didn't get to see other parts being looked into which coulda make the whole thing a lot more interesting.

i felt some parts were STRETCHED TO THE CORE and it was just gahhhh

and also i loved nehemia. she was the one to stand up to bs and use common sense but unfortunately i know what happens to her and will i continue this series bro unless im bored af... no

but the thing that led me from 2 to 3 stars (is my kindness jkjk) but the fact that i did wanna know what happened at the end and how the story may play out but then again maybe its cuz ive done so much reading for school ive finished this mediocre book

well at least its done and i can have trust issues with booktok again lmao

okkk this book was captivatingly interesting. i found it in a charity shop and i found the blurb intriguing so i decided to read it. i personally loved the book not necessarily for its plot (it was a bit muddled) but more for the characters and their development and the whole view of their side of the war. like when lisette became a spy and u saw her move from england to france u could almost feel the difference, the air of tension. i liked how luc and lisette's story developed and how they waited; it really showed the patience that was shown by many in the war. this book had me heart-broken at times, tears in my ears ngl, and u felt the personal pain and loss not only from the war, but from the after effects. it was one of those books which i couldnt put down bcuz of tension and i didnt feel like it dragged along. it showed the twisted nature of people, complicated emotions through times of need. it was one of those books that led u thinking long after. what if this didnt happen? what if they werent like that? what if they stayed there?
it was definitely confusing and therefore the first couple of days i put off reading it, buttttt when u get into it properly, you definitely invest urself.
the characters had their strengths and flaws and you could see the human in the whole story. i really did enjoy this book as it kept me on my toes.
