Say Nothing: A True Story Of Murder and Memory In Northern Ireland by Patrick Radden Keefe
5.0
just incredible. so well researched and paced and written. it’s airtight, provides you with a great near-synoptic understanding but never loses focus. raises some really interesting questions and ideas. obviously it’s a difficult read, it covers a brutal and incredibly tragic part of history, but this is almost an essential read imo and something i’ll be thinking and talking about for a while

Stone Blind by Natalie Haynes

idk why but i didn’t LOVE it like i thought i would. like it was all tell no show. we were told to hate perseus the whole book and he wasnt actually horrible till the end ??? i get how medusa and the gorgons hate him and they narrate but idk it was just jarring hearing how terrible and awful he was and then you actuallg read a bit and he’s just a sixteen year old trying to protect his mother for most of the book ????? also wasnt big on the writing style really or the dialogue - the gods were meant to be witty i think but it was just goofy ???????? strong powerful message and interesting spin on medusa though

Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
4.5
great introduction to unreliable narrators !!!!!! i love stories where you, as the reader, a bystander, are almost at fault for reading it. think the virgin suicides, where part of the tragedy is having to wade through the thick layer of (intentional & satirical) male gaze to hear about the girls. idk where i was going w that but it was something i though of a lot while reading this. consider me a fan of rebecca f kuang !!!!!
