Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig

This started out slow for me. And idk if it was because it was actually slow, or if I was nervous about where it was going, but it took me about 3 months to read the first 100 pages, and then I finished the last 300 in days. One it got going it really was going, and did not let up once. I love Ravyn, I loved him in the first book, but he was even better in this one. Elm and Ione were also a surprise. I was not sure how Gillig was going to make either of them likable, but man did she succeed! I mean Elm was ok in the first one, he had potential, but I could also have seen where it all could have gone wrong with him too. Anyway loved this, it was a fantastic follow up, and two books were the perfect amount of books to tell this story!

Jackson really knows how to write a kid. Kaden was just as adorable as Evelyn was, and was once again a standout. I devoured this book, and even though I guessed the twist, I still really liked it!
One thing about me though is that I hate a liar, and even though Ryder lied to protect Dakota, I personally think there needed to be a mega ton more groveling in the end. Honestly my favorite part was when Cody punched him because he absolutely deserved that. But I guess Dakota really liked that piercing 😂😂
One thing that really bothered me is, ok I get how Ryder fell into this lifestyle, grief makes us do crazy things. However, he has a billionaire cousin, and a cop cousin, so you’re telling me that at no point in the I’m assuming like 10ish years he was coerced into working for this man he didn’t think hey maybe I should talk to one of them and they can help me? Because they sure helped quick in the end. So why wasn’t that a solution sooner? I think that’s also why I can’t get behind his lying to Dakota because all of this had a simple solution, and you know what I don’t forgive him! Still loved the book anyway though

This was my first A L Jackson, but it will not be my last. If you’re fans of Catherine Cowles, and romantic suspense, you’ll love this. Caleb was one of the most intense mmc’s I’ve read in a while, sort of leaning towards a dark romance mmc, but I love dark romance too, so I was of course into him and all of his tattoos. Paisley was amazing. She loves big and she loves hard, and she doesn’t hide from her feelings, and I loved that. Evelyn is basically the cutest little girl to ever exist in literature, and watching her open up to paisley was just the best! I also love Paisley’s friend group. They’ve got fun nicknames for each other, and I’m so excited to see more of them throughout the series. I love a good girlfriend group.

I enjoyed this for the most part, but I felt a little disconnected from the writing. Like sometimes I’d be reading it, and the character would be going on and on with their internal thoughts, and I’d realize I didn’t understand a thing, and had no idea what was going on. Also by the end I really just wanted it to be over already. It def didn’t have to be 400 pages. Also the other man drama was dumb, that whole subplot could have been eliminated.
I did like both Poppy and Jax though, I’m always into a grump, and Jax fits the bill, and Poppy was relatable as the baby in a large family. I also like the accidental pregnancy, and brothers best friend trope. Both were done well here. I don’t think this author is for me, but I think others would have a good time with her.

This is an unpopular opinion, but I kinda like unexpected pregnancy. Weird considering I absolutely never want children of my own, but here we are. I think this one was actually my favorite in the series. The only thing it had going against it is that I have a brother named Joe, and reading any mmc with my brother’s names gives me the ick. But I mostly can look past that.

I love Sophie Lark’s writing, and I love this brutal world she’s building. The school is absolutely absurd, and I’m obsessed with it, with the gothic architecture, with the challenges, with the inherent tripwire of having all these kids from all these mafia families on one tiny island. I also love that even though it’s a college setting, they don’t feel young to me. I was a little nervous about that, but I should have just trusted in Sophie. It was really fun to get little glimpses of characters from the Brutal Birthright series. It’s cool to see them all as parents, and the kids all grown and in this crazy mafia school. I’m excited to see where the series goes. I really liked Anna and Leo. I don’t always love a love triangle, and I didn’t love it here, it was in fact my least favorite part of the book,
especially because you already knew who she’d end up with, so it always felt weird the few times she was with Dean
but I also think that without Dean and his pov the story wouldn’t have been any fun. Dean was a great foil for Leo, and I can’t wait for his book.

Once again, the town, and any scene with all 3 brothers is really where this book shined. Gia and Beckett were fine, but the timeline was a little off, and I just didn’t really care about the two of them all that much. I loved any scene with the kids though, and Aurora calling Beckett Bucket never failed to make me laugh. I’ll continue the series eventually when I need a filler book because the town is really fun, but I won’t be running for the next one.

Every single star I am giving this book is for August Cates. He is a big dumb idiot oaf, and I loved him so much it was ridiculous. He was like if Marshall Eriksen from How I Met your Mother was a Navy Seal instead of a lawyer. Same big dumb lovable energy. He carried this whole book on his gigantic shoulders. Natalie was fine, but honestly she didn’t get likable til way late in the book.
This one was Tessa Bailey at her most ridiculous, and I had a fantastic time. I honestly want to reread it just for the jokes alone. I was laughing almost the entire time. I love a good marriage of convenience, and it’s even better when the couple is already obsessed with each other and still trying to pretend they aren’t. And no one has ever been more down bad than August is for Natalie. It was adorable, and their banter was the best. They could get real mean to each other, but seeing them figure out each others true triggers, and immediately try to be better, while still holding on to the feistyness that made them, them were some of my favorite parts of the book. I just really loved this one, and I’d reread it for the hilarity, and for August over and over.
