Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell

A fascinating analysis of what we would categorize as a cult and the language that is consistently used between the infamous cults (like the people's temple, heaven’s gate, etc.) to the local gym that people can't get enough of.

I highly appreciated that Amanda didn't frame cult followers as dumb or lesser than herself, like a lot of media tend to do, and it gives a refreshing (and arguably more objective) onlook onto what a cult is. If you are of the belief that you could never join a cult because you are smarter than that, would I highly encourage you to read this book as it exposes how easy it is to suck people into these kinds of communities.

This would be useful for anyone, no matter where they are in their mental health journey. If you have ever been told to just take a walk if you are feeling down and find that somehow offensive, try listening to this book. Dan lays out the science behind the conventional tips for better mental health without it coming off as info-dumping, or as if these things are gonna solve all your problems.

I’m not a person that is into art. I Don’t understand art, I don’t particularly like looking at art, and my knowledge about art isn't close to zero it is zero. But this... This is... Ugly... And this is coming from someone that is extremely proud whenever they are able to draw a circle without it looking like a triangle (don’t ask how I’m able to make a round shape have edges), my standard are so low that it goes below the standard most women have for men, but this... this is not it bro. Some of the pages of this book are physically difficult to look at and if it wasn’t for the fact that I know that there is a new team that takes over the franchise later on, would I probably have DNFd this even though I love the characters with all my heart!

TLDR: I’m apparently an art critic now...

I love how Brian K.Vaughan includes political commentary in his work without yelling his opinions from the rooftops.

I totally understand and support why they hired a new team of illustrators. However, I don’t understand why they didn't hire someone that had a similar style or at least went in the same direction as the previous volumes... The characters are barely recognisable at this point!

You can already tell that they are struggling to keep this series from falling apart because of all the staff changes...
