The Couple in the Photo by Helen Cooper
4.0
What do you do when someone you hardly know shows you a photo of them and another couple they met while on their vacation and you recognize one of them? Do you chalk it up to must be a doppleganger or do you become obsessed with proving that your best friend is not who they claim to be?
Lucy and her husband Adam have been best friends with another couple, Scott and Cora, for years. They have spent so much time together that their children are also best friends, they vacation together, and even co-own a beach cottage that they are renovating together. But one day, their lives are thrown into chaos when Lucy's co-worker is showing off photos their recent trip to the Maldives when Lucy sees what she thinks is a photo of Scott, seemingly on vacation with a woman who is not Cora. When the woman in the photo with Scott is reported missing, Lucy begins to suspect Scott is involved.
Panicked, Lucy starts investigating her friends and starts to wonder if the life she built with Adam, Scott, and Cora is what she thought it was or if everyone has secrets and they will do everything within their power to protect them.
An engaging book that does a great job of keeping you guessing until the very end. The story has lots of twists and turns that steer you towards certain conclusions and then gives you a very plausible explanation to make you wonder if you, along with Lucy, are just jumping to conclusions. At times you begin to doubt everything you thought you knew. As you come barreling towards the end, you are rewarded with a satisfying ending that shows you that sometimes you just have to trust your instincts.
