Guardian: Zhen Hun (Novel) Vol. 2 by priest
4.5
it would have been a five-star guilty pleasure read if it weren’t for the dubious consent in that one scene . it’s okay, i’ll go on loving the story and pretend that didn’t happen.

i loved this collection of vignettes, from different points in the main character’s life. honestly, i had to keep reminding myself that this is fiction, since it really read like a memoir, given how the vivid the depiction of events was. even though i felt like i really got to know the character by the end of the book, i just wish the account itself felt more complete.

if you happen to be e.j. noyes, please don’t read this.
not sure why i finished this and it’s beyond me why it has such glowing reviews. here are just some of the things that bugged me (*spoilers incoming*):
i) the main character, sabine, legit says at one point that she’s proud of her nazi ancestry;
ii) a gay man calls sabine, who’s a lesbian, the d-slur and it’s treated as being okay;
iii) sabine is horny 24/7 (even when she’s heavily injured and thinks she might die) and constantly ogles the love interest, rebecca, while she is still in a relationship (and we’re supposed to root for her during this);
iv) the breakup arc is completely unnecessary and sabine’s strong reaction to it makes zero sense, given her earlier emotional cheating;
v) the two main leads have zero romantic chemistry and barely interact before jumping into bed together;
vi) before that can happen, however, cue my most hated trope of all time: sabine hooks up with a random woman while pining for rebecca and realizes it doesn’t help her get rid of her feelings for her (no shit).
overall, i hate sabine and i hate this book. so glad i didn’t buy it physically because i would have been tempted to burn it. will not be picking up anything by e.j. noyes going forward.

what a fun and engaging book with an incredible romance. the slowburn, tension, the yearning - everything i could ever want in a romance book. ngl, my favourite danmei yet. can’t wait to see where it goes and will definitely be checking out priest’s other stuff.

never thought i’d say this but yay, allusions to necrophilia maybe? or maybe not. it was a fun time nonetheless.
my future self, who dnfed the next book bc of non-con scenes: rip.
