Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated
2.5
i really, really wanted to like this book but there are just so many things i hate about it :(
things i liked:
xaden riorson is the only good thing about this book. no i will not elaborate. (okay fine he is sexy)
jk but the disability rep was interesting; it felt pretty self-inserty but i can't really complain about that.
dragons were cool but their lore was lazy and not that cool. orange, red, blue, and green dragons? couldn't think of better species descriptors other than what colour they are and what the end of their tail looks like? more lore would have been epic
things i did not like:
instalove posturing as enemies to lovers >:(
poor world-building - it felt so drab and dull and uninspiring. i couldn't tell you the first thing about the continent
don't even get me fucking started on how cringe the writing style/dialogue was
the main character's personality is so fucking irritating
ngl for a character whose main strength is being intelligent, she was pretty dumb most of the time. she couldn't see shit coming if it was 30cm in front of her face and acted like the most obvious shit was surprising
violet kept repeating the same shit over and over again - cut it out! we get it!
i predicted pretty much everything that happened, including violet getting the biggest, baddest dragon, brennan being alive, and the whole "rebels actually being the good guys" thing
laughed everytime i read the name "jack barlowe" because i couldn't not picture jack harlow
tension was good initially and then it just suddenly... disappeared? they just instantly have sex and fall in love? we find out xaden was in love with her the whole time? what do you guys actually like about each other other than physical appearance? WHERE IS THE GETTING-TO-KNOW-EACH-OTHER? you literally do not know anything about each other hahahahaha it literally just seemed like it was lust
nothing really happens
didn't really care about people that die so it just felt pointless
dain - piss off bro
i feel like there were a lot of missed opportunities. for example, the whole war situation wasn't explained very well, so we don't really have a good idea of what they're fighting for and why (other than the bare minimum). it would have been nice to see more character development with violet and it would have been cool to see how she actually trains - the book pretty much only mentioned that she "had weight training with imogen" for example, but didn't really go much deeper than that. the relationship with her mother and the grief she felt for her brother definitely could have been explored further. the bonding process/relationship-building with her dragons definitely could have been more fleshed out too. the supporting characters should also have been more fleshed out.
everything should have been more fleshed out.
overall, 2.5 stars because i like dragons and fantasy and xaden. it was a good wee escape from reality, and i finished it! i will also probably hate-read (with an open mind) the second one ;)
