I read this before the big wave of fans started. My aunt regularly goes to book signings in Raleigh and she got me this book. I remember reading it in health class instead of listening to my teacher talk about STD's. I think that the characters are very bland. I don't think "love at first sight" is real, and I just think the characters thought they needed to experience "love" before they both die from cancer. I think that their language was a bit too exaggerated for teenagers. I don't know. It didn't click for me. I'm glad it does for other people though. I remember when it really hit that almost all the girls in my entire English college prep class did their book reports on this. I also remember them saying that this was the only book they didn't sparknote. If the truly vapid can enjoy this book, then you know it's not hard to read. It just sucks. You can tell this book was written by a man. Let me be clear, I have no problem with reading men's works. But John Green is a predator. Even the way he snagged his wife raises red flags, and it leaks into the book.

I think it was an absolutely mushy romantic sappy love story. But i read it in a time that I needed that. I didn't give it five stars because I thought that the ending didn't satisfy me. I wish that there would have been more after story between Beth and Lincoln, and I wish that the scene in the office wasn't so long, where they discussed everything. Beth followed Lincoln home, stalked him a bit, etc, and Lincoln read her emails. He was doing it because it was his job. It was still creepy as her stalking him, but it was his job. If I was in that position, I wouldn't apologise so much over it all.

Otherwise, for Rainbow's first book, it's fantastic. I've read Fangirl, and I wanted to read the rest of her books, so I thought I'd start out chronologically. I can see parts of Fangirl in it. Not the plotline, but her writing style starting to form into something a bit more bouncy and playful and unique.
