4.5 stars, but I’m on the fence of giving it 5! I normally just LIKE rom coms, but this one I LOVED. So funny (the only book I think I’ve ever read that made me laugh out loud more than once) and so cute. I loved Olive and Ethan’s relationship and how it transformed as the story went on. Also loved how there was some drama at the end. So so good!!!

Honestly, 2.5 MAYBE 3 stars for me…. I am so disappointed in this one. I’ve seen mixed reviews. I know there are some that have loved it. But I just really did NOT. I think I was super naive in picking this one up. From the cover and people on IG, I immediately thought “oh this looks like such a good spooky season/fall read!” But I really didn’t realize what it was going to entail. This book is full of dark magic, demonic forces, traveling between realms, etc…. Stuff that is not my jam. I LOVE thrillers and horror books, but demons and whatnot are not at all for me. No. Thank. You. Totally my fault that I chose this book without doing more research, but I can’t say I recommend this one. And it was so incredibly long…. Over 500 pages and it could’ve been half that length in my opinion. Sheesh.

I loved this one, and did not want to stop reading! This is my third book of Lisa Jewell's, and I have 3 more on my shelves currently. Love her books!

SPOILERS BELOW:

High school sweethearts Talluluah and Zach had an unplanned pregnancy, which led to them maintaining a relationship for their son, Noah's sake; Tallulah feels stuck, and wants nothing more than to end the relationship, although she has no idea how to do so. You see, Zach has a dark side that he hides from everyone else. Behind closed doors, Zach is incredibly controlling, jealous, and abusive.

When Tallulah meets a mysterious girl named Scarlett, her life begins to change drastically. She finds herself unexpectedly attracted to Scarlett, and begins having a secret relationship with her. In the early stages of their relationship, Scarlett shared that she had a boyfriend, but hid the fact that they had a son together. When Scarlett slowly begins to learn more about Zach's dark side, she does not understand why Tallulah does not get out of the relationship... until she learns of Noah.

As time goes on, Tallulah and Zach's relationship continues to get more intense and destructive. Tallulah finally works up the courage to demand that the relationship end, and Zach move out (they live with Tallulah's mother); however, Zach tells Lula that he is not going anywhere. Following this blow-up, Zach begins to somewhat get his act together; thinking things are better between them, he secretly buys a ring to propose to Lula with. But Lula finds out...

Lulu tells Scarlett of Zach's plans; together, they come up with a plan to reveal their secret relationship/love for each other in order to end Lula and Zach's tumultuous relationship. Lula and Zach go on a date to a restaurant that the girls suspect he is going to use as an opportunity for the proposal; Scarlett plans to coincidentally "show up" at the restaurant too, in order to assist in one of two plans. Plan A was to just decline the proposal. But, Zach becomes frustrated on the date and his mood changes; Lula then realizes Zach is not likely to propose that night, so she texts Scarlett for plan B to come into effect. Plan B was to tell Zach of her secret relationship with, and love for, Scarlett. But, instead, Scarlett unexpectedly comes over to "introduce herself" to Zach, and invite them over to her house for a small get-together. Although Zach really is not interested in the idea, he unenthusiastically agrees.

At the get-together, they are all partaking in drinking and drug use. Zach begins to pick up on Lula's weird/abnormal actions and social cues. He begins to grow increasingly frustrated and demands to know what is going on. In his anger, he expresses his actual plans for tonight had originally been to propose to her. Lula tells him that she would have said no, and proceeds to reveal her secret...

Zach is in SHOCK and is infuriated; he tells Lula that he is taking Noah and she will never see him again; but when he turns to go, Scarlett (who had overheard everything) was standing there waiting for him; in a fit of rage, she hits him in the head, and kills him.

Scarlett's mother comes into the room and attempts to make everything seem okay, and conjures up a plan to store Zach's body in the tunnel under Dark Place (their home). She then drugs Tallulah, and put her in the tunnel as well; Scarlett comes to visit Tallulah in the tunnel periodically, and tells her that it is only temporary, until the police stop snooping around the home. After the commotion has died down, they take Tallulah out by boat. Tallulah has no idea where they are going, and is drugged pretty consistently throughout their travels. Between going in and out of consciousness, she begins to suspect that they are planning to dump her body overboard once they get far enough out to sea.

-----

15 months after the teens went missing, Sophie, a woman dating the new head-teacher of the boarding school finds a clue that is important to the case, and contacts Lula's mother to aid in the search moving forward. Together, they are able to locate Scarlett's family and rescue Lula back to safety.

Scarlett attempts to have her previous lover, Liam, get rid of the body in hopes of escaping incrimination; but he refuses to do so. Scarlett eventually confesses to Zach's murder, and all 3 members of her family (she, her mother, and her brother) are detained.
