Oh my god, what a thrilling, exhilarating read. Ending on a cliffhanger!?!
The story was so fast paced that I almost couldn't take a breath while reading it. Manchee's death broke me :(
The dystopian world was laid out so perfectly, with the full truth of the world revealed to us only in the last third of the book. This kept me hooked, wondering what Todd is in the dark about and also so frustrated that he wouldn't just have viola read his mother's book for him!! Not that it revealed a lot anyway.
An absolute must read for all teens and adults. I can't wait to finish this series.
I was surprisingly invested in this book. After reading Venkatraman's other book, Born Behind Bars, I assumed I would dislike this as much as I did that book. But the characters were well written and the story was emotional while not becoming poverty porn. I found myself tearing up at Viji's struggles towards the end.
Oonga is a small but determined boy from the adivasi village deep in the forests near Odisha. I fell in love with the charming, impish Oonga who is determined to see a play about Rama in the big city. He is laser focused about this as only little children can be. His story is set in the backdrop of the conflict between the CRPF jawaans, the villagers and the 'naxalites', all watched over the the unnerving 'Eye' of the company that mines the treasure hidden in the forests - bauxite, the cause of all this trouble. It's a heart-breaking read with graphic descriptions of the trauma inflicted on the Adivasis. It's also a necessary read and one that will break us out of the bubble we live in.
