I'd like you to come with me on a short mental journey. Imagine you're reading Divergent. Instead of a dystopian YA sci-fi, though, its an adult romance skinned as a fantasy novel. In the first ~20 pages or so my mind attached the descriptions of the rider's quadrant to how the dauntless are depicted in Divergent: edgy, wear all black, can't be bothered with rules, and fight all the time because.... culture? I guess?
I can see how this book is popular amongst those who do not regularly read books in the fantasy genre. However, I am not even close to the target audience for this book (which I believe to be a huge fan of the romance genre).
SOOOOOO much of the writing is giving millennial-core, 2012 just girly things vibes. It really took me out of the world and story.
No hate if you love this book, its just not for me.Â
