No words. I loved every minute of this. The relationships with the SIBLINGS ??? AHHHHHH . It was so beautifully tender, and the love between the siblings was some of the best I have ever read. Scratch that, the whole book was so beautifully tender. A new favorite book and I need a physical copy. Need. I’m genuinely upset that I finished it.
I will preface this by saying this was a required read. Although, I’ve liked required reads in the past, I really did not like this book whatsoever. On one hand, this is a very important story, and I am fully and wholeheartedly for the telling of stories like this. But the kicker for me was that I genuinely hated the main character. I could not stand him, which in turn ruined the entire book for me; I don’t want to pick up a book when the main character continues to piss me off worse and worse as the story progresses And how he treats Neni?? The financial manipulation?? The justification of infidelity? Blatant abuse? Nu uh. The ending also felt very rushed. All of this time was spend building up to a conclusion and then it sort of just, ended? A lot of threads were left fraying. Mbue is a good writer, and she is able to craft stories well but I simply could not get past some of these characters, especially Jende. As a child of immigrants (albeit I’m white as a sheet), I tried to like this book, and hoped to find some connections but it fell flat.
My friend finally convinced me to read this via a buddy read (hi mads if youre reading this !!). I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t my favorite. This book overall felt very soft tone wise, which I honestly really liked. I am a fan of Sally Roonys writing style based on this book alone, I just am not sure that this was the book for me in particular. I dont think it will really stick with me. Even so, still enjoyed.
i love an old, slightly murderous lady once in a while. would recommend if you're in a slump; this was a fun, quick read. was not my fav, and not a super memorable book for me, but I had a good time. do look up the trigger warning before reading though ! some stuff caught me a bit off guard.
This was also required reading , but I also wanted to read it and I did like it . I liked the discussions that aroused from this book and I will be rereading and annotating my own copy .
I’m very happy but I want more please and thank you. Can we just get like 5 more pages of epilogue please? 3 even? 1? Anything? And oh yes yes be a man written by a woman!! by a woman i say ! Some of the lines near the end that leszy says were just yesss . Also it’s so nice seeing more polish folklore! I didn’t realize this was based on slavic folk tales and I was a happy camper. It just somehow missed the last mark for me to be 5 stars but I did enjoy it. Got me kicking my feet a little at times (I’m just girl what can I say).
