I have such mixed feelings about this book… slow and tense (dull at times) but the third act is thrilling. Equal parts homoerotic and existential, but the relationship between Louis and Claudia is near pedophilic. The TV show certainly makes changes to the story for the better.

ok I’ve had ENOUGH death bed lesbianism confessions.

Great book though. Super unique world-building, great character development, intriguing story. Lost some points as I struggled to get into it, and I found myself lost at several parts. But that might have been because I listened to this as an audiobook. I think a re-read as a physical book would up my rating to at least a 4.5

I needed something light, and this was an enjoyable read, albeit flawed.
Pros: Cool political dynamics, fast-paced, Black sapphic lead, and a unique magic system.
Cons: simple prose that felt immature at times, mostly predictable plot, and the romance felt rushed. characters also fell flat for me.
Will I read the sequel? Eh, I dunno. I think this just isn’t the type of book for me. I just kept hoping for more and better from it.

Explorers: A New History by Matthew Lockwood

Did not finish book. Stopped at 40%.
I was expecting a more anti-colonial history of exploration, while this book seemed to focus more on the “collaboration” between members of indigenous communities and their colonizers. Furthermore, the book was structured rather poorly so that individual stories got lost, leaving me pretty much unknowing of what I just read.

Fast and entertaining, although not the most memorable or impactful. It made for a good rainy day read.
Pros:
-short chapters
-intriguing setup
-plot creates a diverse set of stories that come together
-non linear timeline
Cons:
-simple prose
-open ending, with many things unexplained
-little emotional depth to the MC
