Absolutely disgusted with how sexualized the 13 year old girls are. It's not like the narrator consistently speaks against this sexualization, she even takes part in it, when she speaks of her 13 year old sister's body, calling it perfect. There are times this is basically child porn.

There is just so much of this story that seems unnecessary. Who cares that he owned the winning horse that ne named after an acquaintance?

The complex relationships of war-time is very well written. The magic of the world is easy to understand and unique. They seem to keep forgetting that the main character, who holds thousands of lives in her hands is 16 years old, but the worst part is the supposed romance. There is 0 chemistry between Mare and Cal. Their feelings for each other is unbelievable. The most chemistry Mare ever had with anyone is Maven, and he's a douche and a half. Even Shade and Farley have no chemistry. The pairings don't seem to match up well.

The twists are great. The things I expected to happen, happen in a way I hadn't expected. And then the very end shocked me. Way to break book-rules.

I hadn't realized this was a follow up book to the Cruel Prince series (which I haven't read yet) and there seems to be some spoilers for that series. All in all, it was a really great read.

Vaya is an amazing main character. You understand her pain and plight, know why she made the choices she did, while also knowing that you can't justify her actions. The romance is subtle but not understated. All around, it's a very cute story.

I found nothing unique or interesting and the characters were all supremely annoying.

The line "women are better at hatred than men" just ruined it for me. Men and women are both capable of the same range of emotions.
