Zodiac by Romina Russell
2.0
I really wanted to like this book.
I liked the first part of the novel. It was a nice way to introduce the reader to the world of the zodiac. I liked the action and how fast-passed it was. I found the concept of using the astrological signs as a way of dividing the world and having Ochus as the bad guy, a really interesting idea. I love astronomy and I saw the similarities to our solar system’s zodiac and how most people forget that there are in fact 13 signs.
However, once the romance started with Hysan and Mathias is when it all fell apart for me. The romance felt so overexaggerated and forced. All of a sudden boom she likes Hysan and cant take her eyes of him. Then she’s torn to Mathias too, but theres no actual build-up! The characters feel flat and there’s no actual link in the book that demonstrates Rho’s feelings to either of them. Its written in a childish point of view, like whoopps i like him, cause he talks to me. The love triangle was a real miss for this novel.
Then, there was the frustration of the powerlessness of Rho. She’s always getting manipulated, she cant talk to the others, someone else is always in control. She has this power to her, but yet she never uses it. By the time she discovers it, its the final 30 pages of the novel. Dont get me started on her naive character and childish ways that sets her to believe that the moment she gets along with someone, they are automatically her friend. Then she gets surprised that she gets backstabbed.
This book could have been much better, had it been written more closely to the natural world in the sense of character relationships. It just all seems fake, tacky and flat.
Overall more negative than positive.
Hope this review helps.
