Really drew me out of it how often and vividly a main character was described as fat

Stunningly structured and thoughtfully set, pans naturally from thought to thought and grounds you in the oppressive small town heat

De Bernières only really liked writing about Corelli and the book fell apart when he wasn’t in the scene; the first 100 pages were vacuous and the last 80 pages felt rushed.

Besides that, the middle was a thoroughly enjoyable read with rich characterisation- the whimsy and youth of Pelagia and Corelli, punctuated by the wisdom and care of Iannis, along side the power and warmth of Drosoula and Carlo.

Adored and nostalgic, but don’t understand why it’s my dad’s favourite book (sorry dad)
