To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose
3.75
This book is vibes-driven more than anything. Nothing much happens and the characters don't undergo much real conflict or growth (almost every conflict is neatly tied up within five pages of its being introduced), but I still didn't want to put it down because I enjoyed the world so much! It felt like the purpose of this book was to set up the world for hopefully more to happen in the sequel.
Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
3.5
It was so fine. As far as Moreno-Garcia's books go, I liked it a little better than Velvet Was the Night but not nearly as much as Mexican Gothic. Interesting premise; just didn't have the sauce.
spoiler is a strong word because we all know it was inevitable, but i really didn't think there was nearly enough actual romantic or sexual tension for them to just get together at the end.
Rethinking Fandom: How to Beat the Sports-Industrial Complex at Its Own Game by Craig Calcaterra

I really enjoyed this thoughtful look into, among other things, the business of professional sports and how it can influence our individual lives and our culture. A really quick read. Highly recommend.

Probably a little spoilery but I don't know how to talk about it without any:
Fun premise, but ultimately if it wanted to be a cozy mystery i think it needed to say that with its whole chest -- c'mon, just commit to the sabotage plot being the main mystery. every mystery doesn't have to be a murder. It didn't frustrate me that the killer was obvious in and of itself -- it frustrated me that the killer was obvious, then the author hits you with a 'gotcha! the obvious answer was Wrong!' only to immediately do another 'gotcha! when i told you you were wrong last chapter i was lying! It WAS the obvious answer! #girlboss'. It did make me start watching GBBS again though.

I was so consumed and ENCHANTED by this book! The beginning was especially magical -- I could listen to him describe statues all day. I wish the ending hadn't been just an ode to cops 🥴

This one wasn't quite for me, but whomst among us doesn't like to hear about a fancy house? It was also set in the little cluster of Philadelphia suburbs that my partner is from, so it was always a treat to see alternate versions of places I know.

Ultimately, I have nothing bad to say and nothing great to say. It's kind of just a book I read.
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

It is so refreshing when a book that has been hyped and hyped and hyped is actually good haha. I have never been so fully absorbed into a story set in our own world (as opposed to a sci-fi/fantasy). The truly beautiful character work is what shines. There were some bits of it that were disappointing, but the overall feeling I'm left with is wow what a great book, so still 5 stars
