3.0

There were a ton of interesting linguistic fun facts in this book, and I will probably read Montell's other books. I rated it a 3 for one reason: Despite references to the importance of intersectionality and being generally inclusive with regards to gender identity and sexual orientation, it was clear that "women" in this book default refers to White women. While not explicitly defined, there are references to African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) and other language specific to racial and ethnic minority groups. Given the fact that Montell is specifically critiquing how much of the English language is built around the experiences and perspectives of men as the default, it's ironic that she does the same thing with regards to race and ethnicity when considering the experiences of women.
