I wanted to love this book as it sounded so interesting and is based on the author's family. The plot was good which is why I've given it three stars and I'd love to learn more about Irish history. There were so many things I didn't know so the book did teach me a lot.

But oh my goodness the writing. I did receive a proof copy but you'd still think some editing would have been done. So many inconsistencies and continuity errors that I hope have been fixed in the final version. For example, in one sentence it's the next Friday morning but then in the next sentence one of the characters asks why there is knocking on the door at that time of night. And there are so many things like this. I thought I was being overly picky but my housemate read one page and that was enough for her as the writing was so bad.

I also felt nothing for the characters. To say there is supposed to be a forbidden love interest who she's deeply in love with, the main character barely said anything to him. There was no emotion at all.

So disappointing as I felt there was so much potential.

Thanks to Head Of Zeus for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review.
